About Jade
At the core of my life - and my work - is the belief that there is a little bit of magic to be found in the everyday.
I find it in biting into a perfectly ripe nectarine, taking a quick dip in the sea, discovering a new freckle, brushing sand from my feet, the colour of freshwater in August. As a mother, it lies in a tiny hand gripping my finger, little feet taking their first few steps in the grass, being bullied into sharing my ice cream, a Snoopy obsession, overly elaborate birthday decorations. In my marriage, it’s jump-scaring my husband, I-kill-the-cockroaches-you-kill-the-spiders, holiday road trips, days spent gardening, an unnecessarily complicated home-cooked meal, competing to make the best cup of coffee.
Looking at an image captured on film is like closing your eyes and returning to a moment. It’s as though, somewhere in the meeting of light and chemistry, the image holds on to something extra - a feeling.
Film can also be unpredictable. From loading a roll into the camera to developing it into photographs you can hold, the process is manual, mechanical and imperfect. I think that is part of what makes it feel so human.
I approach photography from a place of honesty. I want to give you photographs that take you back to Sundays spent in the garden as a family, rainy days and building block towers with your first as you awaited your second, you and your partner when it was still just the two of you, nearly too many tequila shots after your wedding.
I am equally a serial homebody who genuinely enjoys her own company and someone who will teach an entire hostel to play Egyptian Rat Screw - or a wedding party to play T.R.O.U.T. That is to say, I understand how it feels not to want to be perceived as well as how to connect with the people around me.
When we work together, I’ll give you enough direction that you never feel abandoned, while leaving enough space for you to feel like yourselves and for time to unfold organically. I’m not interested in placing you into a performance of what your life is supposed to look like. I want to photograph what is already there.
My work is for couples, mothers and families who care more about remembering how their lives felt than leaving with a collection of technically “perfect,” posed photographs.
If that resonates with you, get in touch and tell me what you want to remember.
